Bruce Bochy – Eastern Florida State College
Known for his leadership and dedication to baseball, Hall of Famer Bruce Bochy is presented with the 2026 NJCAA Merit Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the sport and its community.
Bochy attended Brevard Community College (now known as Eastern Florida State College) as a member of the baseball squad for two years. Earning All-America status in 1975, Bochy led the Titans to a state title that season. Bochy continued his playing career, getting drafted in 1975 by the Houston Astros. After nine years in the big leagues, Bochy finished his playing career in 1988.
Following his playing career, Bochy was hired by the San Diego Padres to manage their minor league system. Bochy spent the early part of his coaching career managing teams in the minor leagues. After four years of managing in their minor league systems, the San Diego Padres chose Bochy to serve as their third-base coach in 1993. At age 39, Bochy became the manager of the San Diego Padres and the youngest manager in the National League. In his second season leading the Padres, Bochy led the team to their second National League West division title in franchise history. He also earned National League Manager of the Year accolades that season. Shortly after, Bochy led the Padres to a franchise-best 98-64 season, earning them an appearance in the 1988 World Series.
In 2006, Bochy became the new manager of the San Francisco Giants, their 38th in franchise history. His first World Series championship came in 2010 when the Giants defeated the Texas Rangers in five games. It was the first title for the Giants since 1954 when the team was based in New York City. In 2012 the Giants had another successful season under Bochy, clinching the NL West and reaching the World Series despite facing elimination numerous times. The Giants went on to sweep the Detroit Tigers in the 2012 World Series. Success came again for Bochy in 2014 when the Giants defeated the Kansas City Royals in a seven-game series for the world title. Bochy became the first National League manager to win three World Series Championships in a five-year span.
In 2019, Bochy managed his final career game for the Giants before a brief retirement. He served in a front office role with the Giants before coming out of retirement in 2023 to lead the Texas Rangers. He became their 29th manager in franchise history and led them to their first World Series Championship in 2023 against the Arizona Diamondbacks in five games. This made Bochy the fifth manager to have won a World Series with multiple teams. Bochy is not currently managing a Major League squad but has now returned to San Francisco in a special advisor role.
Bochy's career spans decades, from playing at Brevard Community College to managing in the major leagues. Receiving the NJCAA Merit Award recognizes his contributions to the sport and the role he has played in developing players at multiple levels.
