CCBC Catonsville Earns NJCAA Division I Women¹s Soccer Championship Title

ALBANY, Ga. CCBC-Catonsville (Catonsville, Md.) has won the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Women¹s Soccer Championship.
CCBC-Catonsville defeated Iowa Western Community College (Council Bluffs,
Iowa) 1-0 in the championship game at Darton College, the site of the championship tournament held Nov. 15-18.
Shaneka Gordon, No. 7, scored the goal for CCBC Catonsville and was named Most Valuable Forward. Most Valuable Back was Erica Sholly from Iowa Western. Kristen Sample of CCBC Catonsville was named Most Valuable Goalkeeper. The Pima Community College Lady Aztecs from Tucson, Ariz., won the Lea Pilarski Sportsmanship Award. The 2007 Coach of the Year for the tournament is James Haislip of CCBC Catonsville.
The members of the 2007 All-Tournament Team are Kim Newsom, Polk Community College (Winter Haven, Fla.); Jessica Austin, Schoolcraft College (Livonia, Mich.); Ayana Russell and Leighana Krzyzanowski, Monroe Community College (Rochester, N.Y.); Meredith Hogan and Shauna Fuentez, Laramie County Community College (Cheyenne, Wyo.); Viviana Zumpano and Kaylen Jackson, Pima Community College; Danielle Blevins and Hannah Silvery, Iowa Western Community College; and Saige Steinmetz and Shameka Gordon, CCBC Catonsville.
In the consolation games, Monroe Community College defeated Polk Community College 6-1, and Pima Community College defeated Laramie County Community College 4-0.
In the Monroe vs. Polk game, the goal for Polk was scored by Kerri Ann Brown, No. 14. The goals for Monroe were scored by Lindsey Cote, No. 16; Rachel Murphy, No. 19; Brianne Diaz, No. 3; Leighana Krzyzanowski, No. 23 (two goals); and Stephanie Perrotti, No. 14.
In the Pima vs. Laramie game, two goals were scored by Pima¹s Viviana Zumpano, No. 7, and two goals by Pima¹s Nicole Elias, No. 6.
During the tournament, the top eight nationally ranked, two-year college women¹s soccer teams vied for the national title.
The NJCAA, with 500+ member schools in 42 states, is the national governing body of 15 men¹s and 12 women¹s sports over three divisions. Approximately 50,000 athletes compete in one of 24 regions and every year the NJCAA hosts 50 national championships.
