OC Sports NJCAA Softball Players of the Week - May 2, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Bianca Adame (Seward CCC, Kan.), Estela Pinon (Yavapai College, Ariz.), Mareshah Scott (Owens CC, Ohio), Ginger Lonergan (Jones County JC, Miss.), Ashley Guevara (Vermilion CC, Minn.) and Elaine Nescio (Anne Arundel CC, Md.) have been named NJCAA Softball Players of the Week for games April 23-29.
In Division I, Adame was named Player of the Week and Pinon was pegged Pitcher of the Week. The Player of the Week in Division II was Scott, while Lonergan took home Pitcher of the Week honors. Guevara claimed Player of the Week in Division III and Pitcher of the Week went to Nescio.
DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bianca Adame; Seward County Community College, Kan.
Shortstop; El Paso, Texas; El Dorado High School
Adame closed out the Seward’s regular season with a tremendous offensive effort that propelled the Saints on to four victories. The sophomore batted .563 (9-for-16) on the week, bringing home three runs and scoring six of her own. Adame cemented herself in Seward softball history when she stole her school-record 35th base of the season. On the week, Adame swiped six bags and recorded three steals in a 5-1 win at Barton CC (Kan.). Seward and Adame clinched the No. 2 seed in the Region 6 tournament and will face-off against No. 3 seed Garden City CC (Kan.) Saturday.
DIVISION I PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Estela Pinon; Yavapai College, Ariz.
Right-Handed Pitcher; Tucson, Ariz.; Sunnyside High School
Earning Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season, Pinon once again put together back-to-back stellar performances on the mound. The sophomore earned consecutive shutout wins last week over No. 10 Pima CC (Ariz.) and GateWay CC (Ariz.). Pinon struck out 15 batters across 12 innings of work, giving up one hit and two walks in each appearance. Pinon and the Roughriders enter the Region 1 tournament Friday as the No. 1 seed and will go up against No. 4-seeded Central Arizona College.
DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mareshah Scott; Owens Community College, Ohio
Center Field; Maumee, Ohio; Maumee High School
Extending her hitting-streak to 15 games, Scott enjoyed another big week at the plate for the Express. Scott posted a .609 (14-for-23) batting average with a triple and drew two walks. The freshman did an excellent job of putting herself in scoring position, stealing seven bases and scoring 13 runs on the week. Scott and the No. 12 Express will conclude their regular season with a double-header at Macomb CC (Mich.) Thursday and a home double-header Friday against Oakland CC (Mich.).
DIVISION II PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Ginger Lonergan; Jones County Junior College, Miss.
Right-Handed Pitcher; Gretna, La.; Dominican High School
Lonergan claimed her second Pitcher of the Week award of the 2012 season with three impressive pitching performances for the Bobcats. The sophomore earned three wins on the week, striking out 19 batters in 17 innings. Lonergan allowed 15 hits in the three appearances but surrendered only two runs. As the top seed in the Region 23 tournament, Jones County and Lonergan head into a Thursday clash with No. 6 seed Itawamba CC (Miss.).
DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley Guevara; Vermilion Community College, Minn.
Infield; Siren, Wis.; Siren High School
With Vermilion’s regular season coming to an end last week, Guevara excelled at the plate for the Ironwomen. The freshman put up a .480 (12-for-25) batting average with 11 RBIs and six runs scored. Guevara doubled twice on the week and drew two walks. Vermilion and Guevara finished the 2012 regular season with an 11-25 overall record.
DIVISION III PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Elaine Nescio; Anne Arundel Community College, Md.
Right-Handed Pitcher; Pasadena, Md.; Archbishop Spalding High School
For the second time in 2012, Nescio was named Pitcher of the Week thanks to two commanding outings for the Pioneers. Giving up no runs on three hits, Nescio struck out 14 batters in seven innings en route to a 3-0 shutout win over MC-Rockville (Md.). The sophomore’s encore performance was highlighted by 11 Ks and five shutout innings in a 12-0 victory over Garrett College (Md.). Nescio and the No. 4 Pioneers will host the Region 20 tournament this weekend and will face the winner of Westmoreland CCC (Pa.) and MC-Rockville (Md.).
