NJCAA Invited to World University Games
NJCAA to Represent USA at World University Games
Coaching Staff Announced
The National Junior College Athletic Association has accepted an invitation to represent the United States in softball at the World University Games to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, August 8-18, 2007. The NJCAA delegation will consist of Co-Head Coaches Susan Painter (Gulf Coast Community College, Fla.) and Beth Keylon-Randolph (Chattanooga State Community Technical College, Tenn.) as well as Assistant Coach Jean Musgjerd (Rochester Community Technical College, Minn.) and Team Manager Mary Ellen Leicht (NJCAA National Office). In addition, 15 NJCAA players will be named prior to June 1, 2007 for inclusion on the squad.
Susan Painter
The 8th winningest active softball coach in NJCAA history going into the 2006 season, Painter recently eclipsed the 600 career win mark. As a highly successful player, she was honored with induction into the Florida State University Athletic Hall of Fame. While at FSU she won AIAW National Championships in 1981 and 1982, was an All- American in 1982 and 1983 as well as team MVP.
Hired as head coach at Duluth (GA) High School, Painter taught and coached there for seven years. She joined the staff at Gulf Coast Community College in 1993 as a slowpitch coach and took the program into the fastpitch era in 1995. In March of 2005, Painter was recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for her 500th career win. She recently began her 14th season at the helm of the Lady Commodores and currently sports a 624-185 overall coaching record.
Beth Keylon-Randolph
With 29 years of playing and coaching experience, knowledge, and leadership, Beth Keylon-Randolph has spent 12 years coaching in Top 25 NCAA and NJCAA Division I schools and was voted the 2002 and 2005 Region VII Coach of the Year.
Her 2006 Squad finished the season with the Nation's second highest batting average along with the highest pre-season ranking in school history at #2 and finishing the season 4th in the Nation.
Before taking the helm at Chattanooga State, Beth served as an assistant coach with Ralph and Karen Weekly at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga.
In addition to her coaching experience, Beth adds a stellar playing career to her understanding and knowledge of the game. She was selected to Tennessee Tech Softball's Inaugural Wall of Fame in April 2004 and earned the Distinguished Honor of Being inducted into the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame in Nov. 2004.
She was voted the 1994 NCAA Woman of the Year and Tennessee Tech Female Athlete of the Year. As the starting pitcher for the Tennessee Stars against the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team and 1998 Team USA, Keylon-Randolph knows how to excel at the international level.
Jean Musgjerd
Musgjerd was named Head Softball Coach at Rochester Community Technical College in 1994 and since that time has made two trips to the NJCAA Division III Softball World Series, finishing 5th in 2002. During her tenure Musgjerd has coached eight NJCAA softball All-Americans and was voted District Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2002. In 2006, the Rochester Community Technical College program was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as the NJCAA Coaching Staff of the Year. Musgjerd currently serves as the RCTC women's Athletic Director, the NJCAA Region XIII Women's Director, chairs the NJCAA Division III Softball Committee and is the Division III representative to the NJCAA Softball Coaches Association.
Prior to arriving at RCTC in 1991, Musgjerd held positions as head and assistant Volleyball Coach at Bemiji State University and Rochester John Marshall High School. Jean is from Kenyon, MN. She completed her BS in Physical Education and MS in Physical Education/Sports Administration at Bemidji State University. In 2000, Musgjerd was named one of the Top 15 Female Athletes from 1975-2000 at Bemidji State.
