NJCAA Sports Information Director of the Year
The NJCAA Sports Information Director of the Year is awarded to a sports information director who best exemplifies the overall purpose of promoting and leading their institution, athletic department, and student-athletes through sports information.
Created in the spring of 2020, the NJCAA Sports Information Director of the Year is part of the NJCAA Annual Awards that honor three distinct categories across the association – Athletic Director of the Year, Sports Information Director of the Year, and Athletic Trainer of the Year. These awards represent individuals who strive to create the optimal student-athlete experience on their campus while also performing duties that go far beyond the institutional level. Tim Johnston – Macomb Community College (MI)
Tim Johnston is in his sixth year as the Sports Information Director at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan. Johnston is responsible for all aspects of sport communications for the Monarchs, including the athletics website, social media content, statistical recordkeeping, and the creation of highlight videos and game programs for competitions, covering all 11 sports at Macomb. Johnston continues to go above and beyond for Macomb athletics, attending practices and road games to create highlight reels for social media and potential recruitment for student-athletes. His dedication has not gone unnoticed by Macomb's administration and student-body, as his work is described as "helping student-athletes feel connected to the college," by Macomb Community College Athletic Director, Bryan Rizzo.
In addition to his duties at Macomb, Johnston serves as the media director for both the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) and NJCAA Region 12. Under these titles, Johnston coordinates both websites, attends conference and region meetings, and updates all governing documents for both associations. The MCCAA consists of 24 teams, in which Johnston is there to assist in any aspect of sports information for those competitions as well as his role at Macomb. Each week, Johnston publishes standings, leaderboards, and Player of the Week honors to ensure the student-athletes receive proper recognition for their efforts.
Johnston's tireless efforts to provide student-athletes with the best experience as well as the best opportunities to continue their careers past the NJCAA are recognized by his peers across the field and students at Macomb. Johnston is described as "a great representative of this profession," by Greg Lattig, Athletic Director at Lansing Community College. "[Tim] cares about the student athlete and making sure his content reflects them and their institution positively and correctly."
