Zhuravleva claims Discus national title at NJCAA Outdoor National Championships

Carr, Brathwaite, Bartnovskaya runners-up on 2nd day

LEVELLAND, Texas – Vincennes University sophomore Tatiana Zhuravleva won the NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship in the Discus Thursday at the NJCAA Div. I National Championships at South Plains College in Levelland, TX.

Zhuravleva, who was fourth in the Shot Put and 11th in the Weight Throw on Wednesday, unleashed a throw of 170 feet, eight inches to garner the Discus title. VU sophomore Ariane Bell was 15th in the Discus at 121 feet, 9 inches.

Trailblazer sophomore Natalia Bartnovskaya continued her annual assault on the national championship meet with a runner-up finish in the Long Jump. Her jump of 19 feet, 11.75 inches was edged for the win by a leap of 20 feet, 1 inch. Bartnovskaya won the national Pole Vault title on Wednesday.

VU’s other runners-up on Thursday were freshmen Xavier Carr in the High Jump and Kenrisha Brathwaite in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Carr broke the 7-foot mark with a jump of 7 feet, 1 inch. The event’s winning height, however, was 7 feet, 3 inches. Brathwaite turned in a time of 13. 8 seconds in her strong finish.
