Two Former NJCAA Baseball Players Named to USA Olympic Team

USA Baseball (www.usabaseball.com) has announced their 24-man roster for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Among those 24 will be former Pratt Community College (Kan.) standout Terry Tiffee and former Weatherford College (Texas) hurler Jake Arrieta.

Tiffee is currently an infielder/outfielder for the Las Vegas 51s (Class AAA affiliate of the Los Angles Dodgers) and currently leading the Pacific Coast League with a .380 batting average.

He, was a 26 th round draft choice by the Minnesota Twins in the 1999 draft. He became a free agent last off-season after spending seven years in the Twins organization.  Included in that tenure where three stints in Major Leagues in the last three years.  Over those three years, he saw action in 91 games batting .226 over 239 at-bats, including five home runs and 29 RBI. 

Tiffee had a stellar career at PCC, culminating in First Team NJCAA All-America honors in 1999. He still holds school records for a single season in hits (87), doubles (22), and RBI (87).  Also, he holds career records for hits (151), doubles (40) and RBI (148).

Arrieta is in the midst of a stellar first year of pro ball with the Frederick Keys (Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles). He currently leads the team with 120 strikeouts to go with a 6-5 record. His 2.87 ERA is second best on the club and opposing hitters are batting just .199 against the right-hander. Arrieta entered this season ranked by Baseball America as Baltimore 's No. 7 prospect.

He finished his freshman campaign with Weatherford in 2005 with a 6-2 record along with a 3.43 ERA. He then transferred to Texas Christian University where he had an outstanding first season of NCAA D1 baseball, leading the nation with 14 wins. His efforts earned him Mountain West Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year honors. In 2007, Arrieta posted a 9-3 record with a 3.01 ERA in 17 starts, earning him first-team all-conference honors for the second year in a row. He was then selected in the 5th round of the '07 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles.

This is Arrieta's second stint with Team USA . In 2006 he helped guide his homeland to a gold medal at the FISU World Championships in Cuba. It marked the first time a team from the United States won a gold medal on Cuban soil.

The 2008 USA Olympic baseball team will begin international play on August 1 with an exhibition versus Canada at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

The opening rounds of baseball in Beijing will commence on August 22.
