NJCAA Weekend Preview: Football
Charlotte, NC – With the 2021 NJCAA Football season underway, two divisions of ranked matchups will occur this weekend as teams compete on the field in hopes of remaining at the top of next week's polls.
The showdown between No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast and No. 12 Northwest Mississippi kicks off Thursday night. The Bulldogs (5-1) and the Rangers (4-2) are both looking for a win to help improve their standing in the MACCC. Gulf Coast is currently behind Jones (MS) for the top spot in the MACCC South, while Northwest is tied for second in the MACCC North with Coahoma (MS).
This will mark the 43rd all-time meeting, and the first regular season matchup since 2015 between the Rangers and the Bulldogs. The two teams will have a rematch of last year's MACCC Championship game, when Northwest claimed the title with a 40-13 final in Perkinston.
Arguably the most important matchup of the season takes place on Saturday as No. 3 College of DuPage faces No. 1 Nassau. The Chaparrals (3-1) will battle the undefeated Tigers (4-0) in hopes of playing in the Division III postseason.
The game promises to be an epic battle on both sides of the ball. On offense, the Chaps rank third in total offense (376.8 yards per game) with the Lions ranking fifth (353 yards per game). On defense, Nassau allows just 174.3 yards a game, second in the division and COD fifth (286.3).
