Drake named DI Pitcher of the Year
Charlotte, NC – Walters State pitcher Kohl Drake has been named the 2022 NJCAA Division I Baseball Pitcher of the Year after a dominant season for the Senators.
Drake earns the top honor after posting a 14-0 record with a 1.93 ERA and a nation leading 160 strikeouts. The sophomore helped lead the Senators to a third-place finish at the 2022 NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series, an Appalachian District title, and a TCCAA/Region VII title.
The TCCAA Pitcher of the Year tied the Walters State single-season record in wins and broke the single-season strikeout record by 33.
"Kohl had a special season that was fun to be a part of and witness firsthand," said head coach David Shelton. "To strike out 160 batters in a season, and only have 17 walks is truly an amazing feat. To see his improvements from year one with us to year two is a testament to the hard work and dedication he has. He could not be more deserving of this award, and all of us at Walters State could not be more proud of him."
The left-hander was a member of the sophomore class at Walters State that combined for a 121-14 record in their two years. The group had consecutive 60-win seasons while winning the conference, region, and districts both years and finished with a seventh and third-place finish at the World Series.
