No. 2 Lady Senators rout Lincoln Trail, improve to 16-0

HARRIMAN, Tenn. -- The second ranked Walters State Lady Senators scored the first 16 points of their game against Lincoln Trail Thursday afternoon and never looked back in blowing out the Lady Statesmen in the Roane State Christmas Classic at Harriman High School.

The Lady Senators got 41 points from their bench, forced 22 turnovers and held a plus-17 margin on the glass in rolling to a 70-45 victory to close out the 2013 portion of the schedule.

With the win, Walters State improves to 16-0 on the campaign, as they have now won 36 straight regular season games.

The loss drops Lincoln Trail to 5-6 on the season.

The Lady Senators controlled the game from the opening tip, scoring 16 straight points to being the contest before the Lady Statesmen finally broke through. In the opening 16-0 run, WSCC's defense did not allow a shot attempt to hit the rim for the visitors from Illinois until Kearia Pennie scored more than six minutes in.

The Lady Senators stretched the lead to 26-6 midway through the half before outscoring Lincoln Trail 11-10 in the final 10 minutes for a 37-16 halftime lead.

WSCC shot 41.7 percent (15 of 36) in the first half and made 4 of 7 shots from the 3-point arc. Arjae Saunders led the Lady Senators with 10 points and Jephany Brown added 7 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Lady Statesmen cut the margin to 41-23 early in the second half, but the Lady Senators responded with an 11-0 run behind 6 points from Donnesha Shuler-Brown to up the lead to 52-23 with 11:04 left.

Lincoln Trail cut the margin to 62-42 with 3:39 left, but WSCC closed the game on an 8-3 run to provide the final margin.

The Lady Senators shot 38.2 percent (26 of 68) from the field in the contest, including 4 of 11 from long range. Less than 24 hours after making only 6 of 18 from the free throw line, they finished Thursday's win by making 14 of 18 from the stripe.

Saunders led Walters State with 18 points in the win, and she also grabbed 8 rebounds. Brown and Shuler-Brown each added 11 points in the contest, with Brown taking down 7 boards. Karly Frye had 6 points and 9 assists, while Jasmine McAllister, Gaby Gilmore and Monashia Bolduc (10 rebounds) each added 6 points in the victory.

The Lady Statemen shot 36.7 percent (18 of 49) from the floor, including 4 of 12 from behind the 3-point line. Jada Grady led Lincoln Trail with 12 points and 5 assists, while Blayr Poston added 10 points in the loss.

The Lady Senators will return to the hardwood on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when they travel to Hickory, N.C., to take on Catawba Valley. WSCC's next home game is against Cleveland State on Jan. 18.
