 December 19, 2013

HARRIMAN, Tenn. -- Despite a season low free throw shooting percentage, the second ranked Walters State Lady Senators battled through to knock off another ranked team Wednesday night in the opening day of the Roane State Christmas Classic at Harriman High School.

The Lady Senators hit just 6 of 18 free throws against NJCAA Division II's 17th ranked Cincinnati State, but the WSCC defense forced 20 turnovers in a 71-56 victory.

With the win, Walters State improves to 15-0 on the season with just one game left before the Christmas holiday break. The loss dropped the Lady Surge to 7-3 on the campaign.

The Lady Senators got off to a fast start, building a 22-6 lead midway through the first half before the Lady Surge began to come back in the late stages of the half.

Walters State's biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes was 26-9, but Cincinnati State closed the half on an 8-4 run to trim the halftime deficit to 30-17.

The Lady Senators shot 37.1 percent (13 of 35) from the floor in the first half, including 3 of 9 from behind the 3-point arc, but they made just 1 of 4 shots from the free throw line. Donnesha Shuler-Brown led WSCC with 6 points in the first half.

The Lady Surge were held to only 20 percent (6 of 30) shooting in the opening frame, and Emily Fite led Cincinnati State with 8 points in the half.

The Lady Senators went to work on the offensive end to open the second half, scoring 27 points in the first 10 minutes of the half. The Lady Surge found their groove on offense as well, scoring 21 in the same timeframe, but they trailed 57-38 with 10 minutes left in the game.

The defenses took over in the final quarter of the game after WSCC took its largest lead at 59-38, and Cincinnati State never cut the lead below 15 the rest of the way.

The Lady Senators ended the night shooting 42.9 percent (30 of 70) from the field, including 5 of 14 from long range, but they only managed to make 6 of 18 from the free throw line. WSCC did force 20 turnovers that they scored 17 points off of, and they won the battle on the boards, 51-37.

Shuler-Brown led the Lady Senators with 14 points in the win, while Gaby Gilmore added 11 points and 8 rebounds. Karly Frye tacked on 9 points, while Arjae Saunders, Bre Hall and Jasmine McAllister had 8 points each for WSCC. McAllister all grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the victory.

The Lady Surge shot 32.1 percent (17 of 53) from the floor in the loss, but free throw shooting kept them within striking distance as they hit 20 of 31 from the line. Fite recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs, to lead Cincinnati State in the defeat.

The Lady Senators will close out their 2013 portion of the schedule on Thursday with a showdown against Lincoln Trail in the final day of the tournament. Tipoff at Harriman High School is set for Noon.
