Senators head into break with 92-80 road win

WYTHEVILLE, Va. — The Walters State Senators closed out the 2013 portion of their regular season schedule Saturday afternoon with a 92-80 road win over the Wytheville Wildcats.

The Senators used a red-hot shooting performance from both the field and the free throw line to get the win, as they finished the contest shooting 52.6 percent (30 of 57) from the floor and a season-high 82.4 percent (28 of 34) from the charity stripe.

With the win, Walters State improves to 6-10 on the season, as they continue to claw back towards the .500 mark after forfeiting six early season wins. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 6-5 and ended their two-game winning streak.

The Senators had four players reach double figures in the win, and they shot 50 percent or better in each half. After shooting 54.8 percent (17 of 31) in the first half and putting up 43 points in the opening 20 minutes, WSCC added 49 points in the second half on 50 percent (13 of 26) shooting. They also made 22 of 26 (84.6 percent) of their free throws in the final 20 minutes.

Aaron Wheeler and Denard Williams each had 19 points to lead the Senators, with Williams grabbing 6 rebounds and Wheeler tallying 5 boards, 6 assists and 3 steals in the win. Brandon Walters chipped in 18 points and a game-high 7 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, while Daniel Hill tallied 12 points in the victory.

Trey Suttles also had a solid game for Walters State, recording 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks in the win. The Senators held a 43-25 advantage on the glass in the victory.

Wytheville was paced by Jay Allen with 17 points, while Robert Pinkston added 16 and D.J. Dowling had 14 in the loss.

Walters State will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 7, when they travel to Blount County to take on Maryville College’s JV squad. The Senators will be back at home the following night on Jan. 8 against Wytheville.
