TC3 Baseball Sweeps Corning for Regional Doubleheader
 April 18, 2013

DRYDEN, N.Y. – A two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two gave the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team a walk-off win and a doubleheader sweep of Corning Community College Wednesday.  The Panthers won game one 13-3 before taking game two 4-3. TC3 is now 3-9 overall and 3-7 in the West Division while Corning falls to 0-10 overall and 0-8 in the West Division.

Game one had a sloppy start. A pair of outfield errors led to three Corning runs in the top of the first, but TC3 came back in the bottom of the inning to score two runs on two walks and one hit from Matt Jones (Greene H.S./Greene). The second inning saw TC3 again score a pair of runs on just one hit, this time using a walk and two errors before Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk) drove in one with a double. A scoreless third was followed by a seven-run fourth, highlighted by Pfund and Sean Streb (Lansing H.S./Lansing) each delivering two-run singles to make it 11-3 after four. The game ended in the fifth after Brandon Pollack (Groton H.S./Groton) and Akeem Vereen (John F. Kennedy H.S./Bronx) hit back-to-back doubles, and then a pair of wild pitches brought Vereen around to score the 13th run.

Tyler Mattoon (Lansing H.S./Lansing) overcame the three unearned runs in the first to post the five-inning win. He struck out six while allowing six hits and three walks while improving his record to 2-1 on the season. Jones and Pfund each went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Pollock also finished 2-for-3. Vereen had a perfect game at the top of the order going 1-for-1 with three walks and four runs scored.

As sloppy as game one was, game two featured some sharp defense early. Both teams worked out of trouble in the early innings. After TC3 turned a double play to end the top of the first, the Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, only to have Corning return the favor and turn two to keep it 0-0. The Red Barons used another double play in the second to keep it scoreless heading into the third, when the visitors broke through. After Streb opened the frame with a strike out, Corning managed to string together four hits over the next five batters to plate three runs. The Panthers couldn’t answer until the fourth, with Jones lifting a one-out double and then scoring on a wild pitch and error to make it 3-1. Another run came around in the fifth, with Marcus Chestnut (Camden H.S./Camden) leading off with a single, moving to third on a double by Quincey Vanlew (Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon) and scoring on wild pitch. After a scoreless sixth, the stage was set for the final inning dramatics.

Trailing 3-2, Vanlew led off the inning with a single. Pollock laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a Corning error brought Vanlew in to score and left Pollock safe on second. A sacrifice bunt by Vereen moved Pollock to third, and Pfund delivered with a single to score the winner.

Streb pitched out of trouble all game for his first win of the season. He allowed just two earned runs while striking out eight and walking five. Pfund and Vanlew each went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the nine-hit attack.

TC3 and Corning are scheduled to face off again Thursday at Corning.
