No. 17 Lady Senators finish off sweep of Roane State
 March 16, 2013

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – Walters State softball coach Larry Sauceman described this weekend’s series with Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Roane State as a struggle. When it ended, it was also called a sweep.

The 17th ranked Lady Senators finished off a four-game sweep of the Lady Raiders Saturday, as a three-run homer by Courtney Hutcherson in the opening game of the doubleheader gave WSCC a 4-2 win before Andrea Eison belted a pair of homers in the nightcap to give the Lady Senators an 8-1 victory.

With the sweep, Walters State has won 11 of their last 12 games to improve to 18-3 on the year and 11-1 in TCCAA action.

The losses dropped Roane State to 4-12 overall and 3-9 in league play.

In the opening game, Hutcherson had two hits and drove in three runs in the win, while Hannah Kiser, Kendi King, Kaylea Payne and Lindsee Price each added a hit for the Lady Senators. Katelyn Stewart drove in the other run in the victory.

Brianna Leathers belted three hits while Meriam Maynord and losing pitcher Mica Gaines each had two hits in the loss.

Taylor Green (4-1) got the win for Walters State by allowing only two hits and fanning four batters in 3.2 innings of relief. Maddie Griffin surrendered two runs – one earned – on six hits in 3.1 innings as the starter.

Gaines allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings in the loss.

The Lady Senators took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Stewart that scored King, but the Lady Raiders claimed the lead in the third on RBI singles by Maynord and Gaines to make it 2-1.

Roane State led much of the game, but Gaines ran into trouble in the sixth. Kiser singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a base hit by Price. Hutcherson clubbed a two-out, two-strike pitch over the wall in right center, giving Walters State a 4-2 lead and the win.

In the nightcap, the Lady Senators pounded out 13 hits, including two each from Eison, Hutcherson, Stewart and Haley Taylor in the win. Eison roped a pair of home runs, giving her eight on the season, while Stewart had a triple and a double. Hutcherson’s hits both were doubles, and Taylor also ripped a two-bagger.

Lindsey Vaught (5-0) picked up the win after another great outing on the mound. The sophomore scattered four hits and allowed an unearned run in six innings of work. Kelsea Weddle struck out all three batters she faced in the seventh inning to close out the win.

Bridgit Cook was saddled with the defeat after giving up eight earned runs on 13 hits in six innings of action.

Eison smashed a solo homer in the first inning to give the Lady Senators a lead they would not relinquish. Hutcherson added a two-run double in the third to make it 3-0.

Walters State put it away in the bottom of the fourth. Stewart led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Payne. Taylor drove Stewart in with a two-out double and scored on a base hit by Kiser. Eison followed with a two-run homer to make it 7-0.

The Lady Raiders scored in the fifth when Leathers doubled and scored on an error, but WSCC got the run back in the bottom half of the frame. Stewart lifted a triple to right field with two outs, and Payne followed with an infield single to scored Stewart and provide the final run of the game.

Walters State will be back in action Friday when they travel to Columbia to take on TCCAA rival Columbia State. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
