Trailblazers stay unbeaten with 86-71 win over Wabash Valley College
 January 13, 2013

The Vincennes Trailblazers got balanced scoring and made plays when they needed to in fending off an upset-minded Wabash Valley several times throughout an 86-71 VU win Saturday at the VU P.E. Complex. The victory was VU’s 34th consecutive home win and kept the Trailblazers perfect this season against NJCAA Region 24 competition as VU vies for the best possible seed in the March 4-9 Region 24 Tournament at Rend Lake in Ina, IL.

The fourth-ranked Trailblazers (16-0) were led Saturday by sophomore Darius Carter’s 17 points and got 16 each from sophomores Deshawn Delaney and Monte Burney. Sophomore Jeremiah Williams had 12 and freshman Loomis Gerring scored 11.

Rontray Chavis led the Warriors with a game-high 19 in the first game between the two teams since the 2005-06 season.

VU jumped out to a 12-4 lead over the first six-and-a-half minutes and then extended the cushion to 24-11 by the 7:00 mark in the first. Wabash Valley closed the gap to 28-21 late in the half, but Burney buried a trey to end a small run by the Warriors and, when Williams turned in a steal and break-away bucket, the lead was back to 13 at 35-22.

As VU racked up a load of personal fouls and too many turnovers in the second half, Wabash Valley again made a run to get close. This time, the Warriors made it 49-45, but Delaney was the fireman for this Warrior wildfire. Delaney pulled down a teammate’s miss and stuck it back in. The play was part of a period of time in which the Trailblazers maintained the lead and ground out the win.

A replay of the game, which was streamed live on www.wvut.org, will be broadcast via tape-delay at 4 p.m. Sunday on WVUT-TV 22.1. It will be aired a second time at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, on WVUT-TV 22.2.

Up next for the Trailblazers is a trip to Shawnee on Wednesday for a women’s/men’s doubleheader. The women will tip off at 6:30 p.m. (Vincennes time) and the men will start at about 8:30 p.m. Coach Todd Franklin’s squad will then return home on Saturday, Jan. 19, to host John A. Logan at 7 p.m.

VU then heads to Southwestern Illinois on Monday, Jan. 21, for another women’s/men’s doubleheader.
