Panthers Rally to Top Finger Lakes
CANADAIGUA, N.Y. – Playing at Finger Lakes Community College Saturday, the Tompkins Cortland Community College men’s soccer team found itself in an usual position – trailing. For just the second time this season, the Panthers had to rally from a deficit, and they did, posting a 3-2 win to remain undefeated. TC3 is now 10-0-3 overall, 5-0-1 in the Region III West Division, and 5-0 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Finger Lakes falls to 4-9-3 overall, 3-4-1 in the West Division, and 2-4 in the MSAC.
TC3 opened the scoring with a goal by Morgan Shutter (Odessa-Montour H.S./Alpine), scoring off an assist from Nathan Reynolds (Chazy H.S./Chazy) in the 16th minute. Finger Lakes answered a minute later, and the 1-1 score held into halftime.
In the second, Finger Lakes took the lead eight minutes into action. It marked the first time TC3 had trailed since August 31, a game TC3 came back to tie against Brookdale Community College (N.J.). Against Finger Lakes, TC3 took little time to erase the deficit, tying the game a minute later on a goal by James Demshick (Newburgh Free Academy/Newburgh), assisted by Mark Scott (Twin Tiers Christian Academy/West Danby). The game-winner came in the 68th minute, with Joseph Valle (Monroe Woodbury H.S./Highland Mills) converting an assist from Shutter to make it 3-2.
Finger Lakes pressured to score the equalizer, but TC3 keeper McZiggy Richards (School for Human Rights H.S./Brooklyn) came up big with a spectacular save in the final minute to preserve the win. Richards finished the game with five saves.
The Panthers host Cayuga Community College Wednesday. Both teams enter the game undefeated in MSAC play.
