CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. – Sandhills (N.C.) added two pieces of hardware to their trophy case Friday at Chautauqua Golf Club. The Flyers claimed both the team and individual titles at the 2014 NJCAA DIII Men’s Golf National Championship.
Closing the week out with a tournament-low round score of 290 on Friday, Sandhills clinched the victory with a final score of 1,197. Finishing 15 strokes back, Cincinnati State (Ohio) was runner-up with a 1,212 score, edging out DuPage (Ill.) who finished third at 1,217.
Nick Thompson led the way for the Flyers, winning the individual championship with a three-under par 285. Tied for the lead with DuPage’s Alec Meyer entering Friday, Thompson shot a 70 in the final round to claim the crown. The sophomore was one of only two players in the tournament to shoot a 69 with a brilliant performance in Thursday’s third round. Thompson finished fourth at the 2013 national championship.
Sandhills had two more golfers garner top 10 finishes in freshmen Ediz Kemaloglu and Cody Roberts. Kemaloglu took third place with an even 287 while Roberts landed in eighth with an 11-over par 299.
Meyer joined Thompson as the only players in the field to finish under par. The freshman shot a one-under par 287 and was the only player to put together back-to-back 70s with sensational efforts in the second and third rounds. A 72 on Friday however, dropped Meyer out of the lead position for a runner-up finish.
Sullivan County (N.Y.) freshman Richard Elliott and Cincinnati State sophomore Matt Nickoson both finished with a four-over par 292. Elliott claimed the tie-breaker for fourth place while Nickoson rounded out the top five.
