Iowa Western wins Graphic Edge Bowl in shutout of Butler

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – No. 3 Iowa Western flexed its defensive muscles Sunday, shutting out No. 5 Butler 6-0 to win their third straight Graphic Edge Bowl feature game crown.
Reivers kicker Danny Hamilton was the only player to put points on the board in the game. The freshman hit a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter, followed by a 38-yarder in the second. Both offenses were held scoreless in the second half.
Anchoring Iowa Western’s defensive effort was sophomore defensive back Jamie Byrd and freshman defensive back Trevon Young. Byrd led the team in tackles with nine, while Young recorded a game-high two sacks. Butler’s defense was led by sophomore linebacker Nick Cook who totaled a game-high 11 tackles and tallied the Grizzlies’ only sack of the game.
Sophomore running back Akise Teague was a workhorse for Iowa Western, carrying the ball a school-record 33 times for 150 yards. Reivers sophomore quarterback Connor Bravard put his passing accuracy on display, connecting on 23-of-30 pass attempts. Bravard totaled 212 yards through the air in the effort.
The Grizzlies’ attack was led by sophomore quarterback Hunter Vaughn. Completing 16-of-28 pass attempts, Vaughn racked up 232 yards passing. Sophomore Trey Hallman led the Butler receiving corps with three receptions for 51 yards.
Iowa Western has now defeated the Grizzlies in back-to-back seasons at the UNI Dome, after taking down Butler 27-7 in the 2012 NJCAA National Championship Game.
With the victory, Iowa Western moved up to 11-1 for the season. Meanwhile Butler dropped their final overall record for 2013 to 9-2.
