OC Sports Baseball Players of the Week: April 1-7
 April 10, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Ka’ai Tom (Fort Scott CC, Kan.), John Underwood (Palm Beach State, Fla.), Andrew Butts (Delta College, Mich.), Westin Stringer (Jones County JC, Miss.), Dominic Olszta (Joliet JC, Ill.) and Dylan Deavy (Minnesota State) have been named OC Sports NJCAA baseball players of the week for games April 1-7.


DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Ka’ai Tom – Fort Scott Community College, Kan.
Right Field – Kaneohe, Hawaii – St. Louis School

Tom blasted opposing pitchers last week as the Greyhounds picked up six consecutive victories. The freshman batted for a .556 (10-for-18) average, hitting two doubles and five homeruns for a 1.500 slugging percentage. Tom added 15 RBIs, 10 runs scored and three stolen bases to his weekly numbers. Leading Fort Scott with 37 RBIs this season, Tom has also accumulated 10 homeruns – second most in the nation.


DIVISION I PITCHER OF THE WEEK

John Underwood – Palm Beach State College, Fla.
Right-Handed Pitcher – West Palm Beach, Fla. – Palm Beach Gardens High School

The Panthers cruised to a 5-0 victory over Broward College (Fla.) last week behind Underwood’s complete-game shutout. In nine innings of work, Underwood racked up 17 strikeouts and held the Seahawks to just five hits. The sophomore has been the Panthers’ top hurler in 2013, boasting a team-low 1.54 ERA with a team-high 67 strikeouts.


DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK  

Andrew Butts – Delta College, Mich.
Designated Hitter – Bay City, Mich. – Bay City Central High School

Despite dropping five of their eight games last week, the Pioneers saw Butts enjoy tremendous success at the plate. Putting on a clinic, Butts compiled a .760 batting average (19-for-25) with two doubles and nine RBIs. Showcasing his speed on the base paths, the sophomore stole six bases and scored 11 runs. Butts’ week catapulted his batting average to .407 as he leads Delta with 24 hits this season.


DIVISION II PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Westin Stringer – Jones County Junior College, Miss.
Left-Handed Pitcher – Terry, Miss. – Terry High School

Following two rough outings, Stringer rebounded last week and anchored the Bobcats in their 7-0 win over Southwest Mississippi CC. The freshman dealt seven hitless innings in the victory, striking out two batters while allowing three walks. The No. 17 Bobcats saw Stringer drop his ERA down to 2.33 for 2013 and improve his record to 5-0 on the year.


DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Dominic Olszta – Joliet Junior College, Ill.
Right Field – Joliet, Ill. – Providence Cathlolic High School

Olszta had a huge week with runners in scoring position, leading the Wolves to four wins in seven games. Batting for a .375 average (9-for-24), the sophomore made the most of his nine hits with two doubles, two triples and a homerun. Driving home 16 runs on the week, Olszta also scored four of his own. Leading No. 5 Joliet in nearly every offensive category this season, Olszta has a .429 batting average with five triples and 25 RBIs.


DIVISION III PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Dylan Deavy – Minnesota State Community & Technical College
Right-Handed Pitcher – Moorhead, Minn. – Moorhead High School

In the Spartans’ 8-3 win over Western Wisconsin Tech last week, Deavy delivered seven solid innings of work to backstop the victory. The sophomore allowed three runs off of four hits in the win. Deavy also struck out seven batters in seven innings of work.
