His NJCAA service began in 1994 as Assistant Region Director before becoming Men's Region Director from 1997-2003. Why do you recommend the NJCAA to student-athletes?
Art: I look at NJCAA colleges as opportunity colleges. By that I mean they are a great place for someone who has not developed athletically or has had academic issues. An NJCAA institution is an excellent place for a student to develop physically and academically before transfer to a four-year institution.
Jerry: It's an opportunity for student-athletes to get started with their academic career with a little less stress.
What do you enjoy the most about being a Region Director?
Art: Working with the colleges in Arizona (Region 1) and helping with post season playoffs. Also attending the NJCAA Annual Meeting is always a highlight.
Jerry: I enjoy the camaraderie we have in Region 1. All the athletic directors and coaches in Arizona really are great to work with.
What do you enjoy the most about the NJCAA?
Art: Helping develop rules and regulations, being involved at the national level.
Jerry: The NJCAA provides so many young people an opportunity that just is not available anywhere else. I am proud to be part of that.
Tell us something special about your region.
Art: Region 1 is very large with some colleges over 300 miles apart. It is a mix of rural colleges and urban colleges - each with a different set of problems and issues. We have a mix of Division I and Division II colleges playing in the same conference, which presents competitive balance issues.
Jerry: While we have great camaraderie, Region 1 is extremely competitive across all sports. There are no easy stretches during any sport season, which makes it a lot of fun.
What is your favorite sport and why?
Art: Basketball and tennis. I was fortunate to have played basketball in college and professionally and following my retirement from basketball I have enjoyed the competition of tennis.
Jerry: I like them all!
