Nigel Sebastianelli Named 2025 NJCAA DIII Defensive Player of the Year
Charlotte, NC – A golden season at the hands of an elite shortstop dominating the left side of the infield. Nigel Sebastianelli of SUNY Niagara has been named the 2025 NJCAA Division III Baseball Defensive Player of the Year.
The Sophomore shortstop had a significant impact on the Thunderwolves' incredible season. Throughout the year, Sebastianelli registered a .937 fielding percentage with only eight errors. He held down the middle infield as he collected 33 putouts while turning five double plays.
"Nigel is a silky smooth player that makes every play for our team in the field. With his glove, he can change the outcome of the game for us at any time. I'm excited that he got the award. Congratulations to him and his family. We will miss that glove playing behind us every day," said Head Coach, Matt Clingersmith.
Sebastianelli's prowess on the field helped propel Niagara to a 51-2 overall record this season. The Thunderwolves were perfect the entire regular season, not collecting a single loss until the postseason. Sebastianelli was an undeniable asset to the team as they claimed the #2 spot in the nation the entire second half of the season.
Sebastianelli not only flashed the leather, but he was also a threat at the plate. He was in the top ten in the nation in batting average, hitting .468 on the year. His OBP was .514 while slugging .679. He collected 18 stolen bases and 53 RBIs. He finished 6th in the nation in triples with six total.
