Erie Grabs No. 1 Ranking for Second Week in Men's DII Hoops

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.
-Erie Community College (N.Y.) remains the top ranked team in NJCAA Men's Division II Basketball for the second straight week. The Kats are 21-1 overall and received 179 poll points and 11 of 12 first place votes to stay No. 1.

Henry Ford Community College (Mich.) and Monroe Community College (N.Y.) round out the top three spots in this week's rankings.

Erie collected three wins over the past week. On Feb. 2 they defeated Mercyhurst North East (Pa.) 104-63 and then topped Niagara County (N.Y.) 95-75 on Feb. 4. The Kats most recently defeated Jamestown-Cattaraugus (N.Y.) 76-73.

Erie currently leads Region 3 in team scoring (94 ppg) and ranks second in team defense (73.4 ppg). God's Gift Achiuwa averages a double-double of 13.4 points and 13.2 rebounds per game for the Kats. Tola Lawal leads the team in scoring with 16.7 points per contest.

The Kats currently have a one game lead over No. 3 Monroe in the Region 3 standings. However, the two teams meet tonight on Erie's home court in what should be a great contest.

Henry Ford improved to 21-1 overall and currently leads the Michigan Community College Conference East Division by one game over No. 5 Mott Community College (Mich.). The Hawks and Bears will play tonight for the second time this season in Flint, Mich. Henry Ford defeated Mott 94-68 back on Jan. 9.

The Hawks most recent victories came on Feb. 3 when they took down Delta (Mich.) 81-66 and on Feb. 6 when they defeated Macomb (Mich.) 94-52. Marcus Knott had 10 assists and six steals in the win over Macomb, while Jamie Stewart had 24 points and four rebounds.

Monroe picked up two wins last week to improve to 19-1 on the season. Raheem Singleton and Shyrone Carter both had 16 points in the Tribunes' 99-66 win over Genesee (N.Y.) on Feb. 2. Then on Feb. 4 Singleton paced MCC with 19 points in an 86-62 win over Jamestown (N.Y.).

The Tribunes currently rank second in Region 3 in scoring (89.2 ppg) and will play the top scoring team in the region in No. 1 Erie tonight in Buffalo, N.Y. Erie defeated Monroe 100-99 on Jan. 23 in Rochester, N.Y.

NOTES: The No. 1 ranking for Erie is the first time in school history the Kats have been atop the DII poll...Last week's No. 15 Illinois Central falls out of the Top 15...Morton College makes its debut in the poll this week at No. 14.
