New Mexico Military takes down Arizona Western in El Toro Bowl


YUMA, Ariz. – New Mexico Military picked up their first bowl victory since 1999 Saturday with a 32-16 win over Arizona Western in the El Toro Bowl. 

Sophomore quarterback Quinn Billerman led the New Mexico Military effort, completing 22-of-36 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns. On the receiving end of all three touchdown passes, sophomore wide receiver Delvon Carpenter totaled 12 receptions for 166 yards. The Matadors offense was headed by 78 yards on 16 carries by sophomore running back Brandon Gainer.

After giving up an early field goal to the Matadors, New Mexico Military responded with 20 unanswered points. The run was started on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Billerman to Carpenter on 4th-and-2. Freshman running back Greg Morris put the Broncos up 13-3 with a one-yard touchdown run with under a minute left in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Broncos continued their run when Billerman once again hooked up with Carpenter for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Midway through the period, Arizona Western fought back with two touchdowns in 42 seconds. Freshman running back Ramon Alton ran 40 yards for a touchdown, followed by sophomore defensive back Dominique Blackmon’s 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.

New Mexico Military pulled away from the Matadors in the second half, outscoring Arizona Western 12-0 in the final 30 minutes of play. Billerman hit Carpenter from 12 yards out for their third touchdown pass of the game. The Broncos would tack on a field goal and a safety for the 32-16 victory.

The Broncos finished their 2013 campaign at 8-4 following the win. Arizona Western’s loss dropped their record to 2-10 on the season.
