Broadway's big season earns DIII Player of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Freshman Taylor Broadway of Tyler (TX) led the Apaches to their fourth consecutive NJCAA DIII World Series title. For his efforts, Broadway has been named the 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NJCAA DIII Player of the Year.

Broadway, the NJCAA DIII World Series Most Valuable Player, put together an impressive season with a .362 batting average. In his rookie season, Broadway connected on 12 home runs and a total of 37 extra base hits while driving in 64 runs.

"To receive this award, it means everything to me,” Broadway stated. “I have worked hard all my life to hopefully achieve an award like this one day and it's just an honor to be able to hold this award. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the help of my family, friends, teammates and all my coaches throughout my career. Tyler is an amazing city, school and baseball program. This year was such a blast working with my brothers and being able to make memories of a lifetime. I am very thankful for the teammates and coaches I had this year."

Along with his success at the plate, Broadway excelled on the mound down the stretch for the Apaches. In his final seven relief appearances, including a pair in the World Series, Broadway did not allow a run.

Tyler head coach Doug Wren pointed to Broadway as a cornerstone in the Apaches’ path to their fourth-straight DIII championship. “Taylor is an outstanding student-athlete and played a huge role in our quest for a fourth-straight national title. Taylor was able to provide consistent pop in the middle of our lineup and toward the end of the year, he was able to carry a shorthanded bullpen through the postseason.”

“Taylor is a great teammate,” Wren continued, “with outstanding leadership qualities and in my opinion has his best baseball in front of him.”

Broadway is studying business at Tyler.
