Spalding® NJCAA Baseball Defensive Players of the Year announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 2015 recipients of the Spalding® NJCAA Baseball Defensive Player of the Year Award were released Tuesday.

This season’s honors were bestowed upon sophomore shortstops Riley Delgado from Columbia State (Tenn.), Brennan Bozeman of LSU Eunice (La.) and Ryley Warnock from Northern Essex (Mass.).

Selections were made by each division’s respective sport committee.






NJCAA DIVISION I DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Riley Delgado | Columbia State (TN)
Shortstop – Sophomore

Columbia State ranked 13th in the nation in batting average against in 2015, holding opponents to a .245 average at the plate. Playing a major role in keeping runners of the base paths during the season was Chargers sophomore shortstop Riley Delgado.

Earning Region 7 Defensive Player of the Year accolades, Delgado boasted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, accumulating 85 assists and 47 putouts during the process. When runners were aboard, the Miami-native displayed his ability to help out his pitcher with 19 double plays on the year.

Following in the footsteps of his older brother and former Columbia State infielder Dustin Delgado, Riley will suit up for Middle Tennessee next season at the NCAA DI level.






NJCAA DIVISION II DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Brennan Bozeman | LSU Eunice (LA)
Shortstop – Sophomore

Limiting opposing hitters to a .233 batting average – the lowest in the country – few teams were as dominant defensively during the year as LSU Eunice. Anchoring the national champion Bengals in the field was an elite shortstop in Brennan Bozeman.

Named the Region 23 Defensive Player of the Year, Bozeman’s efficiency was showcased with a .984 fielding percentage that was only blemished by four errors in 59 games. The sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ranked second in the land with 164 assists while recording 76 putouts and 16 double plays throughout the season.

Taking the next step in his collegiate baseball career at the NCAA DI level, Bozeman is headed to the Sunshine State next season to play for UCF.






NJCAA DIVISION III DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Ryley Warnock | Northern Essex (MA)
Shortstop – Sophomore

Ranking in the top 10 in opponents’ batting average, the Northern Essex defense played a major role in the Knights’ successful campaign in 2015. Spearheading the effort was a phenomenal middle infielder in Ryley Warnock.

Despite the Knights’ 32-game schedule, Warnock ranked in the top 25 in assists with 19 and tied for 13th with 20 double plays on the year. Falling victim to just six errors in 152 total chances during the season, the sophomore shortstop accumulated a .961 fielding percentage and registered 54 putouts.

A native of North Reading, Massachusetts, Warnock is headed south next year to complete his collegiate baseball career at Ave Maria in the NAIA.
