Tyler Claims Third DI Men's Soccer National Championship in Four Years
 November 17, 2012

ALBANY, Ga. -- Tyler Junior College (Texas) midfielder Joseph Pratt received a low pass from teammate Fernando Castellanos and scored the lone goal, in overtime, against Louisburg College (N.C.) in the title game of the 2012 NJCAA Division I Men’s Championship Saturday in Albany, Ga. The goal delivered TJC its third national championship in four years.

The national title game ended a week-long celebration of high-level soccer on the campus of Darton State College (Gal.) that was everything it should have been. Both teams were aggressive, eager and skillfully athletic and they put on a nail-biter of a show for spectators.

Although the 90 minutes of regulation time were scoreless, there were several buildups and shots that kept the intensity and anxiety high as both teams battled for the ultimate goal in NJCAA soccer. Tyler and Louisburg were a very physical matchup as well, and it was a game riddled with a lot of hard challenges and tackles.

For a moment it looked like Louisburg would have a 1-0 lead after Hurricane forward Jacques Francios scored off of a cross in the first 15 minutes of play, but the goal was negated by an off-sides call by the referee.

Louisburg managed to keep central Apache defender Nathan Trout from scoring on any of 10 corner kicks, and the Hurricane defense allowed only four shots onto their goal.

The Apaches allowed zero shots, flexing a strong defensive effort that kept Louisburg, who scored 12 goals in the tournament, at bay.
