JCJC's Swisher wins first round match in tennis nationals

PLANO, Texas – Jones County Junior College picked up a win during the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Men’s National Tennis Tournament here Monday.

Oak Grove freshman Eric Swisher defeated Osins Carroll of Prairie State Community College (Illinois) 6-3, 6-2 in No. 2 singles. Swisher is scheduled to meet Tendai Tapfuma of Seminole College (Oklahoma) in round two.

Four other Bobcats completed their opening round matches during a rain-plagued day. There was a coaches’ meeting on Monday to adjust the tournament schedule the rest of the week because of the rain.

JCJC’s Graham Lightsey lost to Vinicius Ono of Barton Community College (Kansas) 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, while Josiah Lim fell to Brandon Yang of host Collin Community College (Texas) in No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-1. Robert Kiewit lost to Austin Jacobs of Barton in No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Caleb Byrd fell to Brandon Wolf of Harford Community College (Maryland) in No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

In consolation round action, Kiewit plays Joseph Summers of Itawamba at a time to be determined. Lightsey, Lim and Byrd are also scheduled to play in the consolation round on Wednesday.

JCJC’s Ryan Young trailed Corey Smith of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Georgia) in No. 4 singles, 6-0, 5-1 when the match was suspended by rain. None of the doubles matches were played.

The tournament will continue Tuesday, weather permitting. Matches are being played at Collin College and Plano East High School.
