No. 2 Lady Senators eliminated from national tournament
 March 19, 2014

SALINA, Kan. – A record season came to a premature end for the Walters State lady Senators Tuesday night in the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina.

The second ranked Lady Senators went ice cold from the field in the second half and fell behind with 11 minutes left and never led again in a 57-52 loss to 12th ranked Blinn (Tex.) in the second round of the national event inside the Bicentennial Center.

The win puts the Lady Bucs into the quarterfinals for the second straight season, as they improve to 28-6 on the season.

The loss was the lone blemish of the season for Walters State, as they end the campaign with a 32-1 mark.

The Lady Senators got off to a quick start, going inside and building a 9-2 lead after Donnesha Shuler-Brown converted a 3-point play. WSCC held the lead for much of the half, but the Lady Bucs chipped away throughout.

Blinn got rolling behind University of Houston signee Fatima Adams, who pushed the ball inside to score on several runners and she added a 3-pointer late in the half to cut the lead to 27-25. After the Lady Bucs tied it at 27, Karly Frye had back-to-back buckets to help give Walters State a 31-30 lead, but Amari Jones scored in the final minute to put Blinn up 32-31 at the half.

The Lady Senators shot 35.9 percent (14 of 39) from the field in the first half, and they came up empty on 12 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. McAllister was dominant with 9 points and 8 rebounds in the opening frame.

The Lady Bucs shot just 33.3 percent (9 of 27) in the opening 20 minutes, but made 4 of 10 from long range and 10 of 16 from the free throw line. Adams had 11 points in the half to pace Blinn.

The second half was a defensive struggle, with neither team putting up much offensively. The teams swapped the lead five times in the opening 10 minutes of the half, but a bucket by Katrina Hayden put the Lady Bucs up 45-44 with 11:01 left and they never trailed again.

WSCC never trailed by more than 4 until late free throws by Blinn despite going more than 12 minutes between field goals. Jephany Brown hit a runner in the lane to cut it to 51-50 and later added two free throws to make it 53-52, but Hayden hit a short jumper and the Lady Bucs added two late free throws for the final score.

Blinn finished the game shooting 29.6 percent (16 of 54) from the field, made 4 of 14 from 3-point range and knocked down 21 of 32 free throws in the win. Adams led the Lady Bucs with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Hayden finished with 14 points in the win.

The Lady Senators shot just 30 percent (21 of 70) from the floor, and they misfired on all 20 shots from long distance. They also finished just 10 of 18 from the charity stripe. McAllister had a double-double in her last game for WSCC, as she recorded 11 points and 16 rebounds in the contest. Shuler-Brown added 11 points and 7 boards in the loss.
