Archers Drop Opener in NJCAA Tourney
 March 19, 2014

Cold shooting and foul difficulty sent St. Louis Community College to a 75-64 loss to Des Moines Area Community College in the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Basketball Tournament today in Danville, Ill.

The Archers hit just 35 percent of their shots, and were ice cold in the second half, scoring just 29 points in the closing 20 minutes. The Archers entered the tournament averaging more than 86 points per game.

Cortez Connors and Tevan Evans were saddled with three personal fouls each in the first half, yet the Archers trailed by only nine points at the half.

“We struggled offensively, and they did a good job on us,” said Randy Reed, Archers head coach. “We never got fluid offensively, and we got a little frustrated. Our guys made a lot of mistakes, but we played hard, desperate until the end.”

Connors paced the Archers with 16 before fouling out of the game with 26 seconds left. Randy Reed II was hot early, but finished with 12 points, well below his season average of 21.6 points per game. Evans also fouled out of the contest, in which the Archers were whistled for 27 personal fouls.

DMACC (29-5) led by as many as 15 points in the second half. The Bears outhustled the Archers, gaining many second- and third-chance shots by keeping the ball alive off the offensive boards and grabbing offensive rebounds. Jon Fuqua was one of three Bears in double figures with 16 points. LeTrell Viser and Derek Williams netted 13 and 12, points, respectively.

The Archers (20-11) will face either Dean College or Essex County College in the consolation bracket. The game will be broadcast live on http://www.ihigh.com/njcaatv/index.html.
