September 17, 2013
The Vincennes University Volleyball Team claimed a win over Danville Area in straight sets Monday at the VU P.E. Complex. But the third set included a scare for the Trailblazers (13-6), who won 25-10, 25-17, 25-21.
VU was led by sophomore Kiara Cruz’s 13 kills, freshman Megan Kelsay’s 28 assists and sophomore India Cuttino’s six block assists. Freshman Becca Garrison registered 15 digs and sophomore Kinzi Kiefer contributed nine digs. The Trailblazers also had 16 team blocks.
VU handled the Jaguars easily in the first one, winning 25-10, after things were tight early on. But VU opened up some breathing room. In fact, a Kinzi Kiefer ace led to a Danville Area timeout with the Trailblazers up 10-5. From there, VU stretched the lead to 18-8 en route to ending it by the final score.
In the second set, the Trailblazers jumped out to a 7-1 lead before Danville Area tightened it up to 10-7. Things stayed pretty much even for a time and VU was ahead 18-14 when freshman Ariana Kuhn delivered an ace. But the Trailblazers outscored the Jaguars 7-3 the rest of the way to seal the 25-17 win and set up a chance to close it out in the third set.
That decisive third set saw VU get out to an early lead on a kill by Cruz as part of a 7-2 run that staked the Trailblazers to a 10-3 advantage and prompted a Jaguars timeout. VU opened up a 15-4 lead before Danville pulled within 16-8. VU’s lead then evaporated with a 10-3 tear that brought the Jaguars all the way back to trail only 20-18.
The Trailblazers reached match point with five unanswered points of their own but had to withstand Danville’s trio of points before ending it 25-21 on a smash by sophomore India Cuttino.
Up next, VU will head to the Parkland Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Champaign, IL. The Trailblazers will face Iowa Central at 2:45 p.m. and Rock Valley at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. They return on Saturday to take on DMACC at 10 a.m. and Kirkwood at 12 p.m. Noon.
VU will then return to the PE Complex for a trio of matches when the Trailblazers host Kaskaskia on Sept. 26, Columbus State on Sept. 27 and Wallace State on Oct. 3. All three matches start at 7 p.m.
