VU Volleyball picks up quality victory over fifth-ranked ICC

Upset win highlights Trailblazers’ weekend

The Vincennes University Volleyball Team split four matches, including an upset win over a top 5 program, over the weekend at the Illinois Central College Tournament in East Peoria, IL.

In the Trailblazers’ first match on Friday, VU (12-6) beat Rend Lake in straight sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-20, as sophomore Kristen Murphy led the attack with 13 kills, while freshman Casie Divine recorded nine kills and sophomore India Cuttino finished with seven. Freshman Megan Kelsay turned in 32 assists and freshman Becca Garrison had 19 digs. Divine had 13 digs and sophomore Kinzi Kiefer chipped in with nine digs.

VU had 14 team blocks.

Later on Friday, VU dropped a five-set match to Jefferson College. The scores were 26-24, 23-25, 25-19, 20-25, 13-15.

In that match, sophomore Kiara Cruz and Kelsay both had a double-doubles. Cruz earned her double-double with19 kills and 11 digs, while Kelsay had 46 assists and 14 digs.

Murphy contributed 15 kills and Freshman Emily Murphy had 10 kills. Other statistical highlights included Garrison’s three aces and 33 digs, Kiefer’s 14 digs, eight blocks each by Emily Murphy and freshman Ariana Kuhn and Cuttino’s seven blocks.

On Saturday, the Trailblazers beat host and NJCAA Div. II fifth-ranked Illinois Central in five sets by scores of 25-17, 14-25, 25-16, 15-25, 18-16. The victory was aided by four VU players with double-digit kill totals. Cruz led the Trailblazers with another double-double (16 kills and 13 digs), while Emily Murphy had 12 kills and three blocks, Cuttino recorded 10 kills and three blocks, Kelsay finished with her second double-double of the weekend and a season-high 50 assists, plus 11 digs. In addition, Garrison racked up a team-high 27 digs and freshman Lindsey Laporga chipped in with 14 digs for a season and match high.

In the Trailblazers’ finale at ICC, VU lost to Mineral Area in three sets, 17-25, 17-25, 15-25. Offensively, VU managed only 21 kills as a team as Emily Murphy led with five and five blocks. Garrison had 15 digs and Kelsay finished with 18 assists.

VU will host Danville at 7 p.m. tonight.
