Korte, Kennedy, Simmons tabbed 2013 Defensive Players of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association announced the 2013 NJCAA Defensive Players of the Year Wednesday.



DIVISION I DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Mike Korte – Indian River State (Fla.)
Second Base – Sophomore

Mike Korte established himself as the top defensive player in Region 8 and one of the best middle infielders in the NJCAA this season with Indian River State. 

In 184 chances, Korte fell victim to just five errors and finished the year with a .973 fielding percentage. The Malabar, Fla., native registered 83 putouts, 96 assists and turned 10 double plays in 2013.

With the best fielding percentage among second basemen in Division I, Korte was rewarded with an ABCA/Rawlings NJCAA Gold Glove Award.  



DIVISION II DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Ryan Kennedy – Wake Tech (N.C.)
First Base – Sophomore

Wake Tech saw Ryan Kennedy enjoy one of the best defensive years for a first baseman in NJCAA history.

From Merritt Island, Fla., Kennedy compiled a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with no errors in 304 total chances. The sophomore totaled 284 putouts, 20 assists and converted 24 double plays across the season.

Kennedy received an ABCA/Rawlings NJCAA Gold Glove Award for leading all first basemen in Division II in fielding percentage.



DIVISION III DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Joey Simmons – Finger Lakes (N.Y.)
Outfield – Freshman

Utilizing his tremendous speed and range in the outfield, Joey Simmons earned Division III Defensive Player of the Year honors following a spectacular season for Finger Lakes.

With only one error blemishing his 2013 stats, Simmons recorded a .990 fielding percentage in 103 total chances. The Victor, N.Y., native tallied 98 putouts, four assists and even pulled off a double play in 2013.

Claiming an ABCA/Rawlings NJCAA Gold Glove Award as an outfielder, Simmons was one of only two freshmen to receive the honor in DIII.
