Senators in sixth at NJCAA Division II National Tournament

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. --- The Walters State Senators opened play in the NJCAA Division II National Golf Championship Tuesday with a team total of 295 (7-over par) to keep themselves within striking distance of first place and top ranked South Mountain (Ariz.) at the Goos Pond Colony Resort.

The Senators are only 11 shots behind defending national champion South Mountain (284) after one round and only four shots out of the top three after a solid round around the 7,145-yard par 72 course in Scottsboro.

South Mountain leads Black Hawk (285) by a single shot, followed by Mississippi Gulf Coast (291), John A. Logan (294) and Southeast Nebraska (294) in the top 5. The second five is paced by Walters State, followed by Muskegon (296), Allegany (298), Owens (298), Carl Sandburg (302), Surry (302) and Tyler (302) in the top 12 of the 18-team event.

Andrew Hall led the Senators with a sizzling round of 2-under par 70, which puts him in a tie for fifth overall, just four shots out of the lead set by Parkland's David Keenan at 66.

Brad Hawkins had a solid start with an even par 72, putting him in a tie for 19th place, while Chase Atkins fired a 4-over par 76 to end the day tied for 57th. Cody Johnson added a 77 to put him in a tie for 65th overall, and Ryne Thompson carded a 78 to finish the day tied for 77th position.

The second round of the four-round tournament is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday. The Senators will tee off beginning at 11 a.m. Eastern.
