Top-seeded Butler is out after loss to Pima
 May 17, 2013

ST. GEORGE, Utah – No. 5-seed Pima (AZ) Community College eliminated the top-overall seed and the national #1 Butler (KS) CC with a 6-3 victory to advance to the consolation bracket final game of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Friday night at the Canyons Complex. Pima (50-18) will square off with No. 2-seed Salt Lake (UT) CC Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (MDT), for the right to advance to play #8-seed Wallace State (AL) CC for the NJCAA national title. The NJCAA National Championship game will begin at 12 noon (MDT), with a if-necessary game to follow at 2 p.m. (MDT).

Pima bolted out of the gate for a quick 2-0 first-inning lead, thanks in part to a two-run home run off the bat of Maria Ortiz. The Aztecs struck again for two more runs in the third as pitcher Yvette Alvarez helped her own cause by connecting on a two-run homer of her own to stake PCC to a 4-0 advantage.

Trailing 6-1 heading into its final at-bat, Butler CC strung together a pair of hits and an Aztec error to set up a two-out, two-run double from Ashley Malone to pull to with three runs, but Alvarez ended any hope of a Grizzlies comeback by inducing a game-ending flyout to complete the upset win.

Alvarez struck out four and scattered 10 hits and four runs, one earned, over seven innings to pick up the win. The Aztec hurler also picked up two of Pima’s eight hits for good measure.

Butler hurler Maggie Ham, who pitched in her third game of the day overall, ran out of steam as she was touched up for four runs and four hits in three innings of work.
