Wiist, Gardner, relay teams turn in runner-up finishes at Toledo Invite

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Vincennes University Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams got top-10 finishes in NJCAA Region XII Meet competition Thursday and Friday as the region meet was conducted as part of the 28th Annual Toledo Invitational at the University of Toledo.

The Trailblazers now prepare for the 2013 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship, which will be May 16-18 at Gowans Stadium at Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, KS. Eighteen VU athletes (10 men, eight women) have qualified for the national championship meet.

At Toledo, freshman Whitney Wiist finished second in the Women’s 10000 Meter Run with a time of 41:54.94, while Ernest Gardner grabbed second place in the Men’s Triple Jump at 46 feet, 9.5 inches. Wiist was runner-up to Toledo’s Richelle Gray, who finished in 39:32.51. Gardner was behind Donald Scott, who jumped unattached and logged 48 feet, 2.75 inches.

VU’s 4x400 Meter and 4x800 Meter relay teams claimed second place finishes as well. The 4x400 Meter Relay Team A (Rashaun Jones, Tyree Purham, Cameron Turner and Ed Benson) turned in a time of 3:14.80 (Michigan won with a time of 3:13.87).

VU’s 4x800 Meter Relay Team A (Cordney Ellis, Ken Renshaw, Hunter Motz and John Rodrick) had a time of 9:06.13 to be runners-up to Oakland’s winning time of 8:03.46.

In throwing events, Trailblazer Shaquelle Lewis claimed third place in the Men’s Shot Put with a heave of 52 feet, 1.25 inches.

·        Purham, sixth place, Men’s 400 Meter Dash (50.37), 
·        Mariah Davis, seventh place, Women’s Long Jump (17 feet, 11 inches), 
·        Chloe Heller, eighth place, Women’s 5000 Meter Run (19:58.27), 
·        Taylor Killings, eighth place, Men’s 110 Meter Hurdles (15.26), 
·        Briar Lillard, ninth place, Men’s Shot Put (43 feet, 11.75 inches), and, 
·        Lewis, ninth place, Men’s Discus (141 feet, 9 inches), 
·        Lucas Kling, 10th place, Men’s Shot Put (43 feet, 4.25 inches).
