BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College 2013 baseball team joined some rare company with a sweep of Mississippi Delta Community College on Friday, April 26.

Northeast (28-15, 18-6 in North Division) swept Mississippi Delta 9-2, 3-0 to claim the North Division championship outright for the third time since 1970.

With the division championship, Northeast will host the first round of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Baseball Playoffs as the Tigers welcome Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to Booneville for a best-of-three series starting at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3.

Northeast last won the North Division championship in 1992 under former Tiger head coach Ray Scott after Scott’s Tigers pieced together a 20-23 overall record but went 14-6 in the North Division to claim the first division championship since 1970.

During the 1992 run, the Tigers hosted the MACJC State Championship series before falling to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

In 1970, the Tigers captured the North Division championship under former Tiger head coach Ralph Johnson only to be thwarted by Mississippi Gulf Coast in the MACJC State Championship round.

Northeast last hosted a postseason series in 2009 when the Tigers finished 33-14, 17-7 and as the runner-up in the North Division and welcomed Jones County to Booneville.

Northeast’s 2013 version hopes to rewrite history with the Bulldogs.

During the 2012 season, Northeast finished third in the North Division and had to travel to Perkinston to the second-ranked South team.

However, due to inclement weather in southern Mississippi, Northeast and Mississippi Gulf Coast had to move their playoff series 35 miles south to Biloxi High School and participated in a marathon opening game that lasted until after 1 p.m. on Saturday.

With back-to-back appearances in the MACJC State Baseball Playoffs, Northeast’s baseball team has qualified for the postseason in five of the last six years.

In 2008, the Tigers finished fourth in the North Division and in 2009, Northeast was the runner-up in the North Division and hosted a first-round playoff series against Jones County.

Northeast’s 2010 season saw the Tigers turn in a 15-9 record in the North Division – good enough for third and a trip to Hinds Community College in the first round.

After finishing 12-12 in the North Division and posting a winning record 22-20 in 2011, Northeast began its ascent once again to the postseason.
