TC3 Earns Baseball Split with Broome
 April 30, 2013

DRYDEN, N.Y. – The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team snapped its nine-game losing streak Tuesday, taking game two of a doubleheader with Broome Community College by a final score of 6-3. The win gave the Panthers a split after losing the opener 7-6 in 12 innings. TC3 is now 6-18 in the West Division and 6-20 overall. Broome is 7-17 in the West Division and 8-23 overall.

Both teams brought eight-game losing streaks into game one, so it was no surprise that the game was close the entire way. Scoreless going into the fifth, Broome scored twice in the top of the inning and TC3 scored twice in the bottom, with Akeem Vereen (John F. Kennedy H.S./Bronx) driving both in with a two-out double. In the sixth, Broome again threatened, but TC3 center fielder Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk) kept the game tied by throwing out a Broome runner at home to end the inning. The Hornets did push two across in the seventh to lead 4-2, but TC3 answered in the bottom by scoring two runs on one hit, taking advantage of two Broome errors and two walks.

With both teams into their bullpens, the game remained 4-4 until the 11th. Broome scored on a passed ball in the top of the inning, and TC3 opened the bottom of the inning with a walk and single to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a strikeout, Vereen laced another double to score the tying run, but Broome’s center fielder threw out the would-be winning run at the plate for the second out. A ground out ended the inning, the sixth time the Panthers had ended the inning with a runner in scoring position.

In the 12th, Broome scored twice, but TC3 again answered with Matt Jones (Greene H.S./Greene) scoring on a two-out single by Juan Balbuena (George Washington H.S./Harlem). The rally ended there, sending the Panthers to the 7-6 defeat.

Vereen finished game one 3-for-6 with three RBI. Jones went 3-for-4 and Brandon Pollack (Groton H.S./Groton) was 2-for-5. Tyler Mattoon (Lansing H.S./Lansing) started on the mound and went seven innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven. Jesse Vanlew(Mount Vernon H.S./Mount Vernon) took the loss in relief despite allowing only one earned run over five innings of work.

The Panthers finally took a lead in game two, scoring twice in the first on a double steal and a double by Jones. Broome scored one in the top of the second, but TC3 scored single runs in the second and third to lead 4-1. A Broome run in the fourth was answered by two from TC3 in the bottom of the frame, giving the home team a 6-2 lead. Broome added a run in the fifth, but it was the end of the scoring as TC3 picked up the win.

Sean Streb (Lansing H.S./Lansing) pitched the complete game for his second win of the year, striking out five and allowing just one earned run. Vereen and Jones again led the offense, with Vereen going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Jones going 2-for-2 with two RBI.
