COUGARS SEASON COMES TO AN END
 April 30, 2013

COLUMBIA -The final curtain came crashing down on the 2013 baseball campaign for the Cleveland State baseball team on Monday afternoon as they saw their playoff hopes fade into the sunset with a 12-7 loss to the Columbia State Chargers.

The Chargers completed the three-game sweep on their home turf as they pounded Cougar pitching for 16 hits to post the come-from behind win.

Things started well for the Cougars (27-20, 13,13) as DeAndre Allen air-mailed the third pitch of the ball game over the left field fence for a quick 1-0 lead.

The visitors added two more runs to their lead in the third as back to back doubles from Evan Speicher and Chase Edwards plated a run while Keith Buckhault pushed another across on a grounder for a 3-0 lead.

The lead vanished in a hurry in the bottom of the third as the Charger bats came to life. T.J. Differderfer singled in the first Charger run of the day while Alex Vondohlen drew a walk with the bases loaded as the home team took a 4-3 lead.

The Chargers added two more in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead, but the Cougars bounced back in the top of the seventh to tie the game. Speicher singled and came all the way around and eventually scored on an error while Michael Hargrove tied the contest at 6-6 with a two-run double.

It didn't stay tied for long as the Chargers tacked on six more runs over the next two innings to put the game out of reach. Differderfer and Vondohlen each doubled in a run in the seventh while another bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly did the damage in the eighth as the lead grew to 12-6.

Hargrove singled and scored in the ninth on an RBI single from Zach Janes as the Cougars fought to the bitter end, but the rally would end there as the Chargers recorded the final out and ended the Cleveland State season.

Jeb Scoggins started on the hill for the Cougars while Ethan Davis took the loss in relief. Andrew Padgett started for Columbia State while Austin Rice picked up the win in relief.
