Lady Bobcats finish second in regionals; headed to nationals

MERIDIAN – The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats are headed to Arizona.

The Lady Bobcat tennis team finished second in the Region 23 Tennis Tournament here Thursday at the Northeast Recreation Park.

That qualifies them for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament, which will take place May 4-10 in Tucson, Ariz.

Meridian Community College won the region title with 13 points, while JCJC was second with seven points, Itawamba was third with six and Co-Lin was fourth with one. The top three teams qualify for nationals.

JCJC’s Stephanie Smith, Elizabeth Wright and Brooke Martin each won singles titles.

Smith beat Meridian Community College’s Mallory Davis, 6-1, 6-3, to win No. 2 singles. Smith, a Belhaven signee, is a sophomore from West Jones.

Wright defeated MCC’s Madison Gillette, 6-0, 6-3, to win No. 5 singles. Wright is a freshman from Gautier.

Brooke Martin downed MCC’s Molly Davis, 6-1, 6-1, to win No. 6 singles. Martin is a freshman from Purvis.

In No. 1 doubles, Smith and Alicia Domoney beat MCC’s Ivanna Echezuiral and Katy Adams, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, in semifinals play on Friday. They then lost to Itawamba’s Amy Davis and Katherine Downing in the finals, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

ICC’s Anna-Blair Hunt and Theresa Jackson defeated JCJC’s Brenda Hegwood and Wright, 6-2, 7-6 (3) in a No. 2 doubles semifinal match.

MCC’s Molly Davis and Tara-Beth Hall beat JCJC’s Carly Stuart and Madison Walker, 6-1, 7-5, in a No. 3 doubles semifinal match.
