OC Sports Softball Players of the Week: April 15-21April 24, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Lacye Walker (Chattanooga State, Tenn.), Stephanie Flores (Temple College, Texas), Nicole Larsen (Phoenix College, Ariz.), Keelyn Bonar (Cowley County, Kan.) and Jordan Ray (Sussex County, N.J.) have been named OC Sports NJCAA softball players of the week for games April 15-21.
The Tigers picked up three victories in last week’s four-game series at Roane State (Tenn.) behind Walker’s exceptional performance at the plate. The sophomore was unstoppable, batting for a .714 average (10-for-14) with 12 RBIs and seven runs scored. Walker hit four doubles and two homeruns on the week, building a 1.429 slugging percentage. Leading the Tigers offense this season, Walker ranks fourth in the country with a .524 batting average.
Flores continued her dominant 2013 campaign last week with three phenomenal performances for the Leopards. In 13 innings of work, Flores accumulated 27 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to just one unearned run on five hits. The sophomore notched two wins on the week, improving her record to 18-3 on the season. Leading the Leopard’s pitching staff in 2013, Flores ranks fourth in the nation in strikeouts with 216.
DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nicole Larsen – Phoenix College, Ariz.
Pitcher/Designated Player – Phoenix, Ariz. – Bloomington High School
Playing in her first games of the 2013 season, Larsen led the Bears to three consecutive victories last week. The freshman was 8-for-10 at the plate and hit two doubles on the week. Larsen also drove in 6 RBIs and scored three runs of her own. Despite having played in only five games, Larsen already has nine hits this season for the No. 2 Bears.
Bonar earned wins in all five of her outings last week for the Tigers, improving her record to 18-2 for the 2013 season. In 25 innings pitched, the sophomore compiled 27 strikeouts against no walks. Bonar gave up 23 hits on the week but held opponents to only five earned runs. The No. 4 Tigers saw Bonar drop her ERA down to 1.72 for the year, having pitched a team-high 138.2 innings.
DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jordan Ray – Sussex County Community College, N.J.
First Base – Venice, Fla. – Venice High School
Going 3-3 in their six games last week, the Skylanders benefitted from an offensive spurt by Ray. The sophomore amassed a .563 batting average (9-for-16) with two doubles and two homeruns. Ray also recorded 6 RBIs, eight runs scored and stole two bases on the week. Leading the Skylanders in nearly every offensive category in 2013, Ray boasts a .545 batting average with 11 doubles and 22 RBIs.
