April 23, 2013
DRYDEN, N.Y. – Taking on the third-ranked team in the nation Monday, the Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team was simply over-powered, losing to Herkimer County Community College 20-1 and 13-2. TC3 is now 5-7 in Region III play and 6-17 overall. Herkimer improves to 22-1 overall and 18-0 in region.
The tone was set early, as Herkimer used a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Single runs in the second and third made it 4-0, but any resemblance of a competitive game ended in the fourth. The Generals smacked four home runs, two doubles, and ten hits total while scoring 13 runs in the inning. Another homer and three runs in the fifth made it 20-0 before Macey Morse (Fabius-Pompey H.S./Fabius) and Casey Morey (Owego Free Academy/Owego) hit back-to-back doubles to score TC3’s lone run in the bottom of the seventh.
Game two again saw Herkimer take the early lead, scoring three in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, a single by Morse and a two-run home run by Angela Everhart (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) brought the Panthers within one at 3-2. Herkimer answered with a two-run homer in the second and another homer and three runs in the third to make it 8-2. After the only scoreless inning of the day in the fourth, Herkimer pounded three more home runs and scored five runs in the fifth to make the final 13-2.
By the time the day was over, the Panthers had allowed 11 home runs and 33 hits while TC3 hitters managed a total of nine hits.
TC3 hopes to bounce back Tuesday against Fulton-Montgomery Community College. The home doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.
