Hinds CC women's track claims two victories at Mississippi Open

RAYMOND – The annual Mississippi Open was held on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford on Saturday, and the Hinds Community College women’s track and field team posted an impressive showing.

The Lady Eagles won first place in two events, the 200-meter dash and 4x400 meter relay, and posted many top-five finishes as well.

Pamala Byrd (Jackson) won the 200-meter dash, finishing in 24.38 seconds pacing the field. Teammates Kenyattia Hackworth (Mobile, Ala.) and Shaterrica Rhodes (Greenville) finished in third and fourth place to give Hinds a strong showing.

Hackworth finished the event in 24.82 seconds and Rhodes was slightly behind at 24.85 seconds.

The Lady Eagles 4x400 meter relay team of Kimari Martin (Huntsville, Ala.) Hackworth , Rhodes and Iris Robinson (Birmingham, Ala.) finished in first place with a time of 3:42.42. The first place finish was the second consecutive victory for the 4x400 team.

Hinds also had four second place finishes on Saturday to go along with the two wins.

Byrd finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.70 seconds and the 4x100 relay foursome of Byrd, Vinnessa Barthelomew (Bridge City, La.), Hackworth and Kieyiera Shipp (Olive Branch) earned runner-up honors with a time of 45.69 seconds.

The Lady Eagles also earned runner-up placement in the high and long jump events. Desherra Jackson (Picayune) high jumped 5’4” and Hackworth long jumped 19’3” to give the team a well-rounded finish.
