Bill Smith Open fires starter pistol on 2013 VU outdoor track & field season
April 3, 2013
The Vincennes University Track & Field Program’s Third Annual Bill Smith Open will open VU’s 2013 Outdoor Season Saturday and feature more teams than the previous two meets at the VU Track & Field Complex.
VU Coach Chris Gafner said Rend Lake, Lincoln, Southern Indiana, Evansville, Indiana State and the University of Indianapolis will join the Trailblazers in the meet, which is open and won’t be scored. An automatic timing system will be used. Official results will be available at the meet’s conclusion, and results will also be e-mailed and posted on the VU Athletics web site (www.govutrailblazers.com).
The Trailblazers enter the outdoor season with plenty to be optimistic about. Sophomore Kenrisha Brathwaite defended her 2012 indoor title when she claimed the 55 Meter Hurdles championship with a time of 7.81 last month at the NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Lubbock, TX. Freshman Kendra Bosecker won the Women's Pole Vault indoor national championships for the Trailblazers with an effort of 11 feet, 11.75 inches.
In addition, VU had several solid top-10 finishes at the indoor championship meet.
The VU Women’s Track & Field Team finished in a ninth place tie with Cloud County, while the Trailblazer men were 22nd on their side of the meet.
Along with his duties as head coach, Gafner works with the VU hurdlers, jumpers and distance runners. Long-time Assistant Coach Time Marsee focuses on the teams’ vaulters and throwers, while Assistant Coach Brett Dawson specializes in the Trailblazer sprinters and relay teams.
