 March 27, 2013

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The fourth ranked Walters State Senators golf team took a six-shot lead into Tuesday’s final round of the J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Golf Tournament at Old Sycamore Golf Plantation in Charlotte, and they never looked back in claiming the tournament victory.

Walters State led wire-to-wire to capture the team title as the Senators carded a two-round total of 601, 15 shots ahead of runner-up and tournament host Wingate (616). WSCC followed Monday’s score of 305 with an 8-over par total of 296 in the final round to record the low team score of the day for the second straight day.

Tusculum and Pfeiffer tied for third place at 620, while Lenoir-Rhyne finished fifth with 622.  Lincoln Memorial and USC Lancaster tied for sixth place with 630, followed by Belmont Abbey B Team (633), UNC Pembroke (635), Queens B Team (635), Belmont Abbey C Team (638), Anderson (654), Bluefield State (656) and Catawba B Team (693).

The five-freshman lineup for the Senators never cracked in the final round, as they extended their first day lead by nine shots in the final round.

Knoxville Halls product Cody Johnson was the low man for Walters State in the event, following his opening 77 with a 2-under par 70 in the final round to shoot 3-over par 147 for the two days and finish second as an individual.

Knoxville Central’s Brad Hawkins was right behind Johnson, totaling a 148 (77-71) to finish third in the event. McMinn County’s Ryne Thompson made it three Senators in the top 10 by shooting 152 (76-76) to end the tournament tied for ninth place.

Knoxville Halls grad Will Wright, who had the low round of the first day for WSCC with a 75, shot a final round 79 to finish in a tie for 15th at 154. Campbell County’s Cory Martin ended the event tied for 32nd spot at 159 (78-81) for the two days.

The Senators will look to carry the momentum for Tuesday’s win into their final pre-national tournament event when they participate in the Berry College Spring Fling in Rome, Ga. The tournament will be played on April 15-16.
