Red-Hot Shooting Leads to DII Men's Basketball Title for Rend Lake

Rend Lake College (Ill.) rushed to a 19-3 lead en route to an impressive 87-69 win over Moraine Valley Community College (Ill.) in the title game of the 2013 NJCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament Saturday (March 23rd) in Danville, Ill. The national championship is the first in program history for Rend Lake.

The Warriors’ three-point shooting was pivotal to their big lead in the first half, shooting over 50 percent (6-of-11) from long distance. RLC’s shooting overall was most impressive as they found the bottom of the net on 32-of-62 field goal attempts (51.6%) for the game.

Cortez Macklin led the Warriors with 19 points and eight rebounds. Bronson Verhines posted a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. Jeril Taylor had 15 points and Noel Allen added 12. Dawson Verhines was credited with eight assists.

The Rend Lake defense held Moraine Valley to 34.7 percent shooting from the field. Darryl Hervey led the Cyclones with 17 points. Dave Williams added 13 and Karrington Ward had 11 points to go with 11 rebounds.

The title game matchup between the two Illinois programs marks the first time two teams from the same state have played for the national championship in NJCAA Division II men’s basketball.
