East Central CC Dedicates Baseball Grandstand Covering in Coach's Memory
 March 8, 2013

A covering for the baseball grandstand was recently completed at East Central Community College’s Clark/Gay Baseball Complex and a ceremony commemorating completion of the much-needed project was held Wednesday, March 6, 2013, on the Decatur campus. The stadium improvement was dedicated in memory of Jamie Clark, who led the Diamond Warrior program from 1988 to 2001. Clark was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor prior to the 2001 season and lost his courageous battle to cancer at age 49 on July 18, 2001. The baseball stadium was named in his honor later that year and his jersey #41 was retired. It was the longtime dream of Coach Clark to provide a cover for the grandstand and his dream became reality thanks to current head coach and former Clark assistant Neal Holliman who along with his staff raised the approximately $30,000 needed to complete the project through various fundraising activities along with private donations. ECCC President Dr. Billy Stewart is shown speaking during the special ceremony and expressed appreciation for the public’s support of the Diamond Warrior program. Athletic Director Chris Harris also spoke and provided information on Coach Clark’s successful career, which included the program’s first state championship in 1998. He compiled an overall 365-302-1 record and received MACJC Baseball Coach of the Year honors in recognition of the state championship season. Coach Clark was posthumously inducted into the ECCC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. The ceremony was followed by the Diamond Warriors’ doubleheader sweep of rival Meridian Community College. EC won both games by 7-6 margins.     (EC Photo)
