Lady Bulldogs surge past Northeast at Region 23 Tourney
 March 7, 2013

CLINTON---Once again Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Northeast went to overtime in a post-season tournament game.

On Feb. 25, the Lady Tigers slipped by the Lady Bulldogs 68-66 at the MACJC Tourney in Poplarville. Thursday afternoon in the Region 23 Tournament, the two teams were tied at 52 and headed to overtime…again.

“I told the girls when overtime started it’s the same song, different verse, but this time they’re not gonna like this version,” said Gulf Coast head coach Melanie Stone.

Her words were right on point as Gulf Coast (18-7) avenged the Feb. 25 defeat with a 68-60 victory and advanced to Friday Night’s semi-finals.

The Lady Bulldogs used an 18-2 run late in the first half to open up a 10-point halftime lead. However, Northeast (14-12) chipped away at the lead in the second half and turned the game into another back-and-forth affair. With Gulf Coast standout Markia Nix sitting out most of the second half in foul trouble, the Lady Bulldogs used reserves Kendra Hall and Hellanisa Young to pick up the rebounding slack. Starters Presley Owens (14 points) and Shameika Hart (23 points, 5 three-pointers) took care of the offense, and point guard LaPrecious Thompson provided the heroics by nailing a running jump shot of the glass to give her team a 52-50 lead with 2.7 seconds left in regulation. A foul on the ensuing inbounds play enabled Northeast’s Kiki Gwyn to hit two foul shots to send the game to overtime.

“We watched film over and over again this week and talking about finishing,” Stone added.

In the extra period, Gulf Coast used three-pointers by Nix and Hart, and another big shot by Thompson to take the lead for good. Yasmine Nelson scored 11 points and mopped up with four straight free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Gulf Coast will take on Baton Rouge, a 72-52 winner over Jones, in the Region 23 semi-finals at 6 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the Miss. College Campus. Baton Rouge beat the Lady Bulldogs 64-57 earlier this season.
