LADY TIGERS DEFEAT LADY BULLDOGS IN OVERTIME IN FIRST ROUND OF STATE TOURNAMENT
 February 27, 2013

Poplarville, Miss., --  Northeast Mississippi Community College’s head women’s basketball coach Brian Alexander led his team to an overtime victory in Poplarville on Monday afternoon against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in the first round of the MACJC State Tournament.

Northeast was knotted at 58-all at the end of regulation and was able to outlast the Lady Bulldogs in the extra frame 68-66 to pick up the Lady Tigers' first playoff victory since the 2006-07 season.

Coach Alexander's unit trailed at the break 32-24 and looked to be out matched, however a second half rally led by LaTonya Gadison (Rosedale), Antionette Riddle (Tupelo), and Angelia Allen (Belmont) proved to be a different story.  Gadison had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, while Riddle added 15 points and seven asissts and Allen chipped in with 14 points and eight boards.

Gulf Coast's top performer, Markia Nix scored a game high 34 points, to go along with 10 rebounds, followed by Shamekia Hart's 11 point effort.

“I am very proud of the effort and energy our players brought to this game.  These players met adversity head-on and came out on top."

Northeast will play in the semi-finals on Wednesday, February 27 at 1 p.m. against the South's number fourth seed Jones County Junior College.

The Lady Bobcats defeated Northwest Mississippi Community College --the MACJC's North Division Champions -- in the first round of the state tournament 77-50.  Northeast lost the only game they played against the Lady Bobcats back on November 12 76-73 in Ellisville.  The second game with JCJC was cancelled due to inclement weather.
