Panthers Rally to Beat Schenectady to Advances to Regional Quarterfinals
DRYDEN, N.Y. – Trailing by four points with under three minutes left in regulation, the Tompkins Cortland Community College women's basketball team put together one of its best stretches of play this season, first tying the game in regulation and then running away with it in overtime, winning 77-67 over Schenectady County Community College in the opening round of the NJCAA Region III playoffs. The #8 seeded Panthers will take on #1 Mohawk Valley Community College Friday in a regional quarterfinal. Tip-off will be at one at Mohawk Valley. It’s TC3’s first appearance in the women’s quarterfinals since 2010.
The first half featured eight lead changes as neither team led by more than six points. The home team went to the locker room with a 35-34 lead. In the second half, the teams again traded the lead, with Schenectady moving ahead to the biggest lead of the game at 60-52 with seven minutes left in regulation. The Panthers began the comeback with a foul shot by Chelsy Kern (Candor H.S./Candor) and completed it with a pair of free throws by Kern to tie the game at 60-60 with two minutes left in the second half. Schenectady broke a nearly six-minute scoreless drought and regained the lead with a free throw making it 61-60 heading into the last minute. Chelsi Rosa (Bainbridge-Guilford H.S./Bainbridge) hit a free throw with 55.7 second left, knotting the score at 61-61. On the next possession, Schenectady rebounded their own miss, putting them in position to hold the ball for the last shot, but TC3’s Meghan Ideman (Moravia H.S./Moravia) came up with a steal to send the game into overtime.
Moments into the extra period, Schenectady reclaimed the lead with a free throw, but Kern again tied the game with another foul shot, making it 62-62 with four minutes left. Over the next three possessions, the Panthers took control. Nicole Goodwin (Newfield H.S./Newfield) scored off an assist from Audrey Kate Ordway (Dryden H.S./Dryden) and then again off a pass from Ideman. Ideman netted a pair of free throws to give TC3 a 68-62 lead with three minutes left. Ordway made it points in four straight possessions with some great hustle, beating everyone down the floor to turn a pass from Ideman into a layup and making it 70-62 with 2:20 left. The next possession saw TC3’s first missed shot in over two minutes of play, but an offensive rebound and put-back by Goodwin made it 72-62 with two minutes left. Schenectady scored its first overtime basket from the floor with 1:21 left to go, but it was too little too late as the Panthers pulled away for the win.
Kern led a balanced attack with 24 points to go with eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and two steals. Ideman posted 22 points, three rebounds, three assists, and two steals and Goodwin had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, while also blocking three shots. Ordway had a game-high 12 points while Rosa and Adrienne Murray (Moravia H.S./Moravia) shared team-high honors with five assists each.
