VU Trailblazer Bowlers ready to defend 2012 national championship
 February 26, 2013

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY – The Vincennes University Bowling Team begins defense of its National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship Friday when the Trailblazers start action in this year’s NJCAA Bowling National Championships at AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, NY.

The tournament is hosted by Erie Community College of Buffalo, NY. VU enters the event as the 18-time and defending NJCAA champions.

VU Coach Gary Sparks has been pleased with this team’s development throughout the season and hopes the improved performances continue through the title event. The Trailblazers were characterized by considerable inexperience at the collegiate level this year. In fact, at the beginning of the school year, Sparks said this year’s team was probably the youngest of his VU tenure.

In comparison to the four-year schools that VU competes against, the Trailblazers are always young but this season featured 10 freshmen and five returning bowlers. Still, the Trailblazers did what Sparks expects each year. They matured on the fly.

“We’ve definitely improved our chances through the course of the year,” Sparks said. “Early on, we were struggling with a lot of players lacking some of the competition experience that really helps. In the second half of the season, we have been able to take advantage of them getting some of that experience and they’re bowling much better right now.”

Sparks added that the Trailblazers seem much more focused, another improvement from early in the year.

“So, we will see if they can put two good days together for another title,” he said.

Sparks has picked out the opponents he believes are the teams to beat at the national championships.

“Probably the two biggest roadblocks this year are Hudson Valley Community College and Schenectady Community College, because both of those teams have had solid years,” he said.

However, VU has had more tournament exposure than any other NJCAA team – especially against the top teams in the country.

“That always helps at NJCAA (Championships) time and hopefully that can help carry us through this year,” Sparks said.
